familiar faces

Taking a quick break from new acts to run through some news on people you have, or should, know about:

New J Dilla.  I've said here before that this guy has been putting out more music after he passed then 2Pac and that trend continues.  FACT and Nah Right have video of Dilla's mom talking about a new album called the Rebirth of Detroit".  Here it is:

Staying on hip hop somewhat, DOOM and Thom Yorke are apparently doing an entire album together.  Mr. Yorke has now put out an album with Radiohead, is doing stuff with Burial & Four Tet that I am a giant fan of, was working with Flying Lotus, and now is working with MF DOOM.  I barely have the time, energy, patience to write on this thing once a week and he's got 4 projects going.  Way to set the bar jerk.  Here is some of the new music:

Thom Yorke Live DJ Set @ Low End Theory LA 3.9.11 from Theo Jemison on Vimeo.

Another collaboration that promises to be interesting if nothing else is the Flaming Lips & Neon Indian.  Go over to Disco Naivete to hear the first leak of a track they've done together.  It's called "Is David Bowie Dying?", so I'm thinking an upbeat track....

Last thing I've got for you is some Tropicalia collaboration called Red Hot & Rio 2 from the Red Hot Organization.  The first time they did this they got some amazing admirers of Bossa Nova and did a tribute album.  This time around we've got Beck, Neon Indian, Javelin, and many more paying homage to the late 60's genre that is stupendous.  It is without a doubt on my radar and if you'd like to hear/learn more about the genre here is a link to a Yours Tru.ly article (complete with examples) of some of the people that will be covered on this album.

Until next time.

Holy Fuck!

I'm going to need someone to come clean up this mess I just made in my pants after reading the lineup for Virgin Free Fest at Merriweather Post Pavilion on 9/25.  LCD, Neon Indian, MIA (i'll still watch a car crash), Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, Die Antwoord, Edward Sharpe and more.  Did I mention it's free?!!  WTF are these guys doing different then pitchfork and Lolla?  I'd feel raped if I just got back from what was a decent line up at the pitchfork fest this past weekend only to hear I could go see all those bands for free in the fall when it'll be gorgeous out.  SUCKERS!

Weekend Music

Pieces of the People We LoveEchoesStatic On The Wire
Quick recap of a concert I went to on Friday at Voyuer "Making Time".  Always love these parties and was pissed I missed Neon Indian earlier this year.  Holy Ghost! opened up and I was interested to see them play as a band, as I was only familiar with their remix work of Phoenix and the like.  They did not disappoint and kept the crowd riled up for the main act.  The Rapture killed it, per usual, and it was a sweaty sweaty dance fest that had more cowbell involved than I know what to do with.  You could have rung out my shirt when I left there.  Caught up with some good friends, saw some awesome music, and cut a rug.  All in all a bueno Friday night.  Check out phrequency's review/photos of the show for a pro's take.  It's amateur hour here at the exact change offices.

Neon Indian is making moves

Psychic Chasms
Alan Palomo and Co. are doing everything in their power to be the kings of this "chillwave" throwback 80's movement.  This includes some of the following:

They released their first album on Lefse, but it was reported that Neon Indian signed with Fader Label.  Check out the stories here:  (via Pitchfork/Billboard)

In other Neon Indian news, you like that segue? You can't teach that.  Neon Indian's single that was released on Mountain Dew's Green Label Sound, Sleep Paralysist, now has a music video which is the band's first.  I have to say that this is probably the most polished of all of Alan's tracks and I believe it, in part, is because he worked with Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor.  Great lyrics and a well written song.  Check out the video below and download the track for free here (thanks PMA):

Information Overload

This should keep you bastards busy for a little.  Bunch of new stuff I was tuned onto the past couple days.  So when you read this, imagine me with my nerd glasses on perusing the interwebs over my lunch break for new stuff to talk about.  Cause that's exactly how it goes down:

This is like work...

Good lord it's taking a lot to figure out how to do all this nonsense.  Post this, tag that, HTML blah blah blah.  More to the point, at the request of a friend here's a link to a music video for the band Local Native's from PMA's website for the song "World News":

Local Native's - World News

Secondly, I've been pushing Neon Indian pretty hard amongst friends to some avail.  You can't win em all, but it's America so to each their own.  Frontman Alan Polomo got the chance to interview Peter Gabriel for Stereogum and I thought it was cool to see how big a fan Gabriel is of Polomo's album.  Check it out:
